Steve Creep and The Wildcards

In this in-depth podcast episode, the enigmatic host Brian sits down with Steve Creep from Steve Creep and The Wildcards to delve into the intricacies of a life dedicated to the art of sound. Steve, a passionate artist with years of experience, opens up about his personal and professional journey within the ever-evolving music industry. He recounts the band's formation and the excitement and challenges that came with producing their first single "Wind Me Up."

As the conversation unfolds, Steve candidly discusses the period of introspection and doubt that led them to consider alternative career paths outside of music. Despite the allure of stability in other professions, Steve's love for his craft ultimately drew him back to the stage and studio.

The interview takes a deeper dive into the transformative power of the internet in shaping modern music promotion. Steve emphasizes the newfound ability for artists to reach global audiences with just a few clicks, while also acknowledging the irreplaceable magic of live performances and touring. He shares insights into the meticulous process of finding the right bandmates, emphasizing that the alchemy of band chemistry goes beyond mere technical skill—it's about finding individuals who share the same vision and passion for music.

Listeners are treated to tales of the Steve's most impactful concert experiences, including the raw energy of a Whitesnake show, the technical mastery of guitar virtuoso Steve Vai, and the unforgettable stage presence of the band Life, Sex, and Death. These performances not only left an indelible mark on Steve but also served as a source of inspiration for his own stagecraft.

Steve Creep offers his perspective on the current landscape of rock music, noting the genre's resilience and the unique challenges faced by bands touring in the expansive and diverse terrain of Canada. Their personal pantheon of musical heroes is rich and varied, with the likes of the incomparable Freddie Mercury and the genre-defying Prince shaping their artistic voice.

In a lighter moment, Steve reveals his choice of a Jack Black song as the soundtrack to his life, a humorous nod to the playful side of his personality and the joy that music brings to his existence.

Throughout the episode, Brian expertly guides the conversation, ensuring that listeners are not only entertained but also given a rare glimpse into the heart and soul of a musician who has lived through the highs and lows of the music world. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in the real stories behind the songs and the artists who create them.

Steve Creep and The Wildcards

During the Covid lockdown in 2020-21, Steve Creep connected with old-time friend Tom Shemer of Montreal’s rising talent The Damn Truth. It was Tom who encouraged Steve to record his first solo record with Tom serving as producer and engineer. The result is a four-song EP with Steve performing all instruments and vocals. Always the team player, Steve Creep opted for releasing the record on the premise that it feels more like a band vibe. Much like his childhood hero Prince who played an early role in encouraging Steve’s influence of musical diversity, he wanted a band name. Tom and Steve came to an agreement that attaching a band name to the solo name would be the best compromise, thus giving it the classic idea of acts like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Prince and the Revolution and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.

Steve recruited some of his favourite musicians to work with which would now be known as The Wildcards. The music needed to be served by the right guys for the job so he selected long-time music partner Scott Mitchell as the secret weapon playing a unique grinding bass sound while adding large melodic vocal harmonies. Rounded out by well-seasoned drummer Will Laurin whose extensive touring and live experience bring a diverse playing style and a no-bullshit mentality. Finally but not least is rising up-and-comer Phil Di Sessa who brings youth and a Bluesy guitar style that compliments everything the songs deserve.

The music is a culmination of 70’s classic rock with classic punk undertones. The music is mixed in with 90’s power pop hooks that … Read More
