In this episode of "Concerts That Made Us," Brian sits down with Nic Olsen from SonOfOld, who has recently released his critically acclaimed album "Echoes from a Silent Hill." Nic delves into the intricacies of his journey, starting with his bold move from South Africa to the culturally rich landscape of Germany. Nic provides an in-depth look at his creative process and the pivotal role played by his collaboration with renowned producer Theo Crous. He also highlights the invaluable contributions of Foo Fighters' multi-instrumentalist Rami Jaffee, whose expertise added a unique dimension to the album. Through these collaborations, Nic was able to blend diverse musical influences, resulting in a sound that is both innovative and deeply personal.

Reflecting on his experiences within the South African and German music scenes, Nic offers a comparative analysis, shedding light on the distinct characteristics and opportunities each scene presents. Looking ahead, Nic shares his aspirations for future tours, expressing a keen interest in exploring new territories and connecting with a broader audience. He discusses the evolving landscape of the music industry, particularly the shift towards digital platforms and the importance of maintaining genuine connections with his audience in an increasingly virtual world.

Nic Olsen - SonOfOld Profile Photo

Nic Olsen - SonOfOld

Nic Olsen, a seasoned veteran of South Africa’s alternative rock scene, first made his mark as the frontman and songwriter for Perez, a band that garnered two South African Music Award nominations and delivered four chart-topping hits in the early 2000s. His songwriting prowess further solidified with tracks penned for the indie-rock giants Parlotones, including the platinum-certified anthem “Push Me to the Floor.”

Venturing into solo territory, Olsen launched SonOfOld with the acclaimed albums Change is how you Feel and 3% Baby in 2008. Praised by Rolling Stone Germany, these records showcased his dynamic
range, blending acoustic pop with Elliott Smith-like harmonies and a fusion of British pop and ’90s indie rock, particularly highlighted by the psychedelic ballad “See It Slow.” After a hiatus, SonOfOld resurfaced
in 2020 with a self-titled album under Gallo Records, followed by the critically celebrated EP Ghosts in 2022, which was noted for its distinct and cohesive sound.
