Nic Olsen, a seasoned veteran of South Africa’s alternative rock scene, first made his mark as the frontman and songwriter for Perez, a band that garnered two South African Music Award nominations and delivered four chart-topping hits in the early 2000s. His songwriting prowess further solidified with tracks penned for the indie-rock giants Parlotones, including the platinum-certified anthem “Push Me to the Floor.”
Venturing into solo territory, Olsen launched SonOfOld with the acclaimed albums Change is how you Feel and 3% Baby in 2008. Praised by Rolling Stone Germany, these records showcased his dynamic
range, blending acoustic pop with Elliott Smith-like harmonies and a fusion of British pop and ’90s indie rock, particularly highlighted by the psychedelic ballad “See It Slow.” After a hiatus, SonOfOld resurfaced
in 2020 with a self-titled album under Gallo Records, followed by the critically celebrated EP Ghosts in 2022, which was noted for its distinct and cohesive sound.
